Granting User Privileges??

I have setup an SQL MSDE instance on my PC and I currently finished working
on the BE in an access 2003 project. I believe it is now time to define
roles, users and grant each one its privileges, but how do I do that?
I know about GRANT, REVOKE etc, but
1. Where do I type these?
2. Is all this information encrypted?
3. When installing the MSDE I set a password what is this all about? Will
it have any impact on user level security?
4. Is there a visual tool to handle user level security, such as in an
Access database?
5. As I indend to create a distributed database application is these
security scheme in accordance to that?
6 and final. How can I let the superuser (aka the superior user of the
client) grant privileges to other users, after granting him the option to
grant? eg form?

In a script, run with osql.exe against the database is one way.
Query Analyser from a developer pc or pc with sql server installed is another

> 2. Is all this information encrypted?
Not unless it is embedded in your application, and only run locally or through an encrypted connection.
Even if it was scripting the database will get this configuration type of information back. The encyption in
SQL Server 2000 / MSDE is for view, triggers and stored procedures - i.e. code, and is crackable anyway.

> 3. When installing the MSDE I set a password what is this all about? Will it have any impact on user level security?
Depends on what authentication mode you use - with windows authentication, the only password you
have to worry about is the sa one on the install, and this is only a problem if someone at some stage
changes the security to SQL/Mixed.

> 4. Is there a visual tool to handle user level security, such as in an Access database?
If you map windows groups to the SQL database roles, then your user management is done under windows itself.
The beta for SQL 2005 Express includes a GUI tool, and there is a web based one for 2000.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Apart from them there is osql.exe for the masochistic, Enterprise Manager for the licensed, or your application
doing sql calls behind the scenes.

> 5. As I indend to create a distributed database application is these security scheme in accordance to that?
Well you are going to have to enable the network libraries, which immediatly gives you an order of magnitude
more security worries. For example a breach in your install of MSDE can grant full access to the PC (xp_cmdshell).
Integrated security is Microsoft's recommendation, but you still need to think about changing network ports and
firewalling.

Grand Total

I am having a hard time figuring out how to total a column. If I have
January Febuary March
Type1 10 4 3
Type2 4 8 2
Type3 1 9 1
I want a total for each month, NOT each type. I have tried right
clicking on Type and choosing subtotal but that only gives me 10, if I
try to change the expression to a Sum, I get an error that aggregates
can't live in groups.
I have read that I should add a textbox and enter an expression. I
have tried that too and got closer but it seems the only scope that is
actually allowed (dispite what BOL says) is the dataset, which does
give me the total for the whole matix, but I only want each column
totaled. I have tried to replace DataSet1 in the expression with the
name of the Month group, but that errors too.
Am I just blind, this shouldn't be this difficult, right?I have a similar problem but in my case I can't add the columns. My
idea ould be to adjust the MDX statement to get the total row. Just add
the root element to the columns of your query and you should get the
total line.
root element example: [Organisation].[Business Area
Code].CurrentMember.Parent

When looking at the matrix report the field names were in the field
spots, but... What needed to happen was to make the field names a SUM.
So instead of just =(Fields!allitmonthclosedcalls.Value) what was
needed was =Sum(Fields!allitmonthclosedcalls.Value) Then the SubTotal
feature worked. The SubTotal can be seen when you right click on the
row group header and choose SubTotal. (I hate it when specifics aren't
given)
Without the SUM in front of the field I only got 10 in the SubTotal
field, but with the =Sum(Fields!allitmonthclosedcalls.Value) then it
added the whole column.
I am assuming that the way it is being read is that the Sum of 10 is
10, the Sum of 4 is 4 and the Sum of 1 is 1. Then the SubTotal is the
Sum of the Sums. A screwy way to get where I needed to be, but it
works.
Hope this helps.

Gradual Performance Degradation

Hi
I am using vb6, ADO 2.8 and SQL Server 2000.
Each time I run a stored proc (updates and inserts) I find that I get a 20%
increase in execution time, both through VB6 and Query Analyzer. If I
Disconnect and reconnect before executing the performance remains the same.
Any ideas where I should start looking.

if you get the same performace degradation.
I suspect that the problem is with your VB code rather than the database.
You might try posting on a VB newsgroup to see what the recomended way is of
making multiple calls to the database. I know I have rewritten how my
connections are opened and closed as many as a dozen times to tune a VB
program doing a single insert 8000 times. My current code is using a
component for DB access, which opens and closes the connection every time it
is called, so I can't say exactly how I handled the connections after my
tuning.

Got to be something wrong... http://myserver/reports REALLY slow

Is anyone experiencing the folder.aspx taking a really long time to render
the list of reports? On our server, all other web sites a very quick, but:
opening http://myserver/reports/Pages/Folder.aspx can take as long as 40
seconds to list a few reports!
Thinking it must be an install or configuration issue... any idea?
All comments appreciated.

Got BIDS working, was there another way?

i re-installed the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE several times(4) trying to get the BIDS part to work. Each time i had the issue of it looking for the devenev.exe as others have mentioned. I gave up on a 5th install and went for the unsupported option of running vs_setup , after the toolkit.exe dumped all the install files to its temporary directory i went in there and ran it sperately...but essentially i did it the same way as this method...

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=368549&SiteID=1

while this did work, it seems to be the unsupported way.

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=665067&SiteID=1

Im not opposed to going back and doing it right, but was there ever a conclusion as to why the BIDS program sometimes doesnt install? im using 2k5 express products on this machine...

Did you have any other version/Edition of Visual Studio on your computer when you installed the Toolkit? If so, which version and Edition? Was the existing version/Edition installed to the Default location?

I've not been able to reproduce this problem myself, which makes it hard to figure out how to fix it. Thanks for the additional information.

Mike

the Visual Studio products currently on this machine are all express editions, this would include

vb express, C# express, and visual web developer express...

i think its important to mention i had the pro beta 2k5 on this machine as well.... i know there was trouble for some upgrading their visual studios to 2k5 after having used the beta so maybe this issue ties into that?

let me know if theres any more info i can provide.

Mike,

I have tried to install BIDS ( from the tool kit) on two different machines each are not finding devenv.exe. Both machines are winXP sp2. Both machine have netframe 1.1 and 2.0. Both machines have sql 2005 express advanced. One machine has VS 2003 and the other machine has vs c# express and web developer express. Both toolkit installs were done to the default directory.

I hope this helps in youor being able to recreate and provide a fix.

|||

Thanks to both of you for your replies, one more piece of information I'm looking for is the path to which you installed the VS programs. If you could reply with that, it would be very helpful.

Mike

|||I ran through the toolkit install again to capture the default installation path but since It saw that "...the selected component is already installed" , I did not see it. So.....went to Control Panel/add/remove programs and seeing no change/remove specifically for BIDS, I selected MS SQL Server 2005 change. Then selected BIDS to be removed. Afterwards, I ran the tool kit install and selected only BIDS to be installed but still get the message that the selected component is already installed. So........where to now? Is it time to just start over by uninstalling/re-installing evrrything from netframe 2.0, sql express and VS express?|||

Hi Kendsr,

I think you're mis-interpreting what I'm asking. I want to know where you installed Visual Studio not BIDS. There seems to be an association between having any Visual Studio Edition installed on your computer to a non-default location prior to installing BIDS that is causing this problem and I'm trying to determine if this is the case for you.

Thanks for the additional troubleshooting. Also, make sure to do a search on your computer for devenv.exe to see if it is found anywhere on your computer at all.

Mike

|||my path for the express products is

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8

i take the defaults when i install, just out of the memory of .dll troubles of yesteryear and things looking for the default paths.... However i could see how having the beta of 2k5 installed at the time might have made the installer default to another directroy... let me know if theres any more info youd like... i guess we could always look for registry problems?|||

Just to confirm, do both of you have a working version(s) of Visual Studio on your computer?
If so, what versions?
Could you pull up the properties of the shortcut for your VS product and let me know what the target is?

A bit of a technical explaination here: BIDS is not a product, it is a set of VS projects that allow you to build RS reports. These projects are available from any non-Express VS product. Devenv.exe is just the normal VS development shell, and the BIDs shortcut is simply a pointer to the VS shell. If you have a non-Express version of Visual Studio 2005 installed before you install BIDS, the shortcuts the BIDS and VS should point ot the same place.

As I've said, we've found that if you installed VS to a non-standard location, it looks like the BIDS shortcut ends up pointing to the wrong place. The work around is to update the shortcut to point at the actual location where devenv.exe is sitting. The story is more complex if you have one of the VS Express Editions on you computer, we can't leverage VS Express installations, so we have to install our own copy of VS for BIDS to use.

Thanks for sticking with this and providing this information.

Regards,

Mike

|||i have what appears to be fully working express products....

C # express
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\VCSExpress.exe"

vb express
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\vbexpress.exe"

web dev express
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\VWDExpress.exe"

if its looking for a full version of Visual studio i can see why it was missing... i had the beta of 2k5 but have since uninstalled it(before i attempted sql server express installs) ... i havent really made a full project out of any of the express products but i have several littel test like apps that compile and run with no errors.

another thing to note is that im pretty sure i searched for a devenv.exe and came up empty handed when i ran a search on my PC... i was going to try and point the shortcut at the right place....

im still open to more questions so feel free to ask away !|||

Normally this problem is related to non-default installation location, which doesn't seem to be the case here. I'm wondering if something about having the beta version installed might have caused this issue. If all you have on your computer is the VS Express editions, then you wouldn't find devenv.exe, since VS Express use different environments. In that case, the Express Toolkit should install it's own version of VS to be used by BIDS.

You actually got this working by running vs_setup.msi individually, right? We'll likely not be able to track down the cause of the original problem in this case, but I want to make sure you actually have a working verson of BIDS. In your case, it seems something prevented the Toolkit installer from correctly running vs_setup.msi during the full product setup, I'm guessing it's related to the beta.

Mike

|||

let me see if I understand all this.......

On my laptop which has .net1.1, .net2.0, sql express 2005 and VS c# express......the tool kit should have installed it's own version of VS to be used by BIDS. I don't see this version and there is no devenv.exe on the laptop.

On my machine at work which has .net 1.1, .net 2.0, sql express 2005 and VS 2003......the toolkit would install the BIDS projects to be used by VS 2003. There is a devenv.exe in the VS 2003 directory and when I change the target on the BIDS shortcut to point to that version, I don't see the BIDS projects.

In both cases of installing the toolkit, I was never asked nor did I provide an installation path. So I'm not exactly sure where the toolkit went. The laptop thinks BIDS is still installed as I can't do a re-install after removing it via control panel/ms sql server/change.

I'm willing to stick this out as I'm keen on evaluating this tool, but I have to admit, it should not be this complicated.

|||yeah i was able to get the BIDS to install by running the vs_setup.msi by itself... it seems to be fully functional and such, but i was double checking because i would hate to run into a brick wall later on down the road...
not sure what it was about the beta, but i seem to recall lots of bug issues with people installing the pro vs 2k5 ... maybe its all related , but somehow i think im the only one around here that ran the beta and not the express... oh well another mystery, but at least it has a work around... thanks for looking into things|||

Hi Kendsr,

Let me see if I can take a step back and explain how this all works...

What is BIDS? - BIDS is a set of Project Templates that plug into Visual Studio 2005. Depending on the Edition of SQL Server you install, you can get projects for Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services. For SQL Express Toolkit you only get the Reporting Services templates because that's all that is installed by SQL Express.

What is devenv.exe? - This is the executable for the Visual Studio development environment. BIDS can only use the Visual Studio 2005 development environment, earlier versions can't be used.

How does SQL Express Toolkit use VS 2005? - When you install BIDS from the SQL Express toolkit, we look to see if you have any non-Express Edition of Visual Studio 2005 installed. If you have one of theses Editions installed, we just install the BIDS Project Templates and add a BIDS shortcut that points to the existing VS 2005 devenv.exe. If you don't have VS 2005 installed, or if you only have the VS Express Editions installed (which don't have devenv.exe), then we install a scalled down version of VS 2005 along with the BIDS Project Templates and shortcut.

As I said earlier, we only use VS 2005, you can not use BIDS with VS 2003. In the case where you have only VS 2003 installed, SQL Express Toolkit should install the scaled down version of VS 2005 for use by BIDS, it won't even recognize the 2003 install.

Now back to your specific configuration

We've found an issue where the BIDS shortcut points to the wrong location when any Edition of VS 2005, including the Express Editions, is installed to a non-default location before the Toolkit is installed. In this case, devenv.exe does exist on the computer, it's just not where the BIDS shortcut thinks it is. In this case, simply pointing the shortcut to the correct location solves the problem. (Again, this is 2005 only, you can't use 2003 for this.) Specifically, devenv.exe is installed under <root>\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE where <root> is what ever non-default location you picked during Visual Studio 2005 installation. (Note: This has nothing to do with the location where you install SQL Express Toolkit)

You see to have some other issue that results in the scaled back version of VS not being installed when it should be. It would be interesting to take a look at your setup logs from when you installed the Toolkit to see if they say anything about what happened. The setup logs are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG, could you find the logs from when you installed Toolkit and see if there is anything interesting?

Could you also take a look at the shortcut for C# Express on your computer and tell me where it points to?

Thanks,

Mike

That's the explanation I was looking for. The only thing I see in the Summary.txt file are messages about not meeting hardware requirements ( i believe this is memory though I have 512MB on both machibes - maybe that's not enough? Though the checks during install only issue a warning) also message about install being interupted which I believe coincides with the message saying BIDS is already installed. I've tried this several times on my laptop and probably have it good and hosed by now. It might be a good idea to reinstall sql express 2005 and then the tool kit again. Now that I kno where to look foe install messages, that might be easier. At one time - in the early log files The file "...TOOL.txt" showed successful install. Also saw a successful removal but no other "...TOOL.txt" files since. Is it possible to just remove sql express 2005 via the control panel and start over or do I need to clear out anything else?

As far as the machine at work, I'll check it when I get in tomorrow. Probably will want to do the same thing.

Thanks for your patience

Got BIDS working, was there another way?

i re-installed the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE several times(4) trying to get the BIDS part to work. Each time i had the issue of it looking for the devenev.exe as others have mentioned. I gave up on a 5th install and went for the unsupported option of runningvs_setup , after the toolkit.exe dumped all the install files to its temporary directory i went in there and ran it sperately...but essentially i did it the same way as this method...

while this did work, it seems to be the unsupported way.

Thanks for your patience

good time to shrink TLog?

sql2k sp3
Ive got a db that I just created 3 days ago and already
the TLog is 5 gigs. I do a Full Backup at 2AM every day
and TLog backups every 5 minutes between 5:AM and 7:PM.
This is a replicated db. Every night before the Full
Backup we turn off replication, truncate 3 tables, bulk
insert new data into those tables, turn on replication.
(Of course that explains the big TLog.) The only way I can
get the size of the TLog down by a signifigant amount is
to do a "backup log with truncate_only" followed by
shrinking the file. Does anyone know, based on this
scenario, when a good time to do this stuff is? I tried
only doing the shrink part but it didnt reduce the size a
whole lot. Is there another way to go about this?
Thanks.Chris
I'm finding some of the things you are doing a little hard
to understand, but that may be due to not having all the
info. What are you using replication for? It seems strange
to turn it off, do some major changes to your database and
then turn it back on. Do you not replicate those changes?
Are you doing a database snapshot following the work? How
are you keeping you databases in line with this process?
One possible solution for your actual problem, depending
on disk space and DR strategy, would be to take a full
backup before the changes, go to simple recovery mode.
Perform the changes. Switch back to full recovery after
the changes and take another full backup. This should cut
down on the growth to your transaction log.
I think a better understanding of your replication usage
may lead to a better solution.

So our client can access this data. I need to turn off

Yes. These tables are in their own Publication and it gets
re-snapshotted every night.

Is my suggestion to change the recovery mode during the
busy period not an option then? That way you should not
need to shrink the log. Whilst it may not always possible,
I would like to set up systems so your database and tlog
are the correct size and don't require shrinking. It's not
a good practice to perform regular shrinks.
Just a thought, are you perfomrning regular tlog backups?
By the way how big is your database?

Going nuts - The ConnectionString property has not been initialized - help!

I'm struggling with the different methodologies for using DataSets in 2.0. I can knock this out in no time flat in 1.0, but am bogged down in 2.0. Can anyone guide me on the right track? My code is below. I'm forming a DataSet from a SQL Server Express database from the user's choice from a drop down. My connection string "ASOCTCOConnectionString" is declared in my web.config and used successfully throughout in the WYSIWYG configurations of my databound controls. But I want to control this in code. This si getting frustrating and right now I'm longing for the clean simplicity I had with Web Matrix :(

In any case, any suggestions? It crashes with this error when opening the connection withMyConn.Open(). I just want to be able to configure a DataSet and apply it to my controls and results.

<code>

Dim connectionStringAsString = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("ASOCTCOConnectionString")

Dim MyConnAs System.Data.IDbConnection =New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connectionString)

Dim MyQuery, SearchStringAsString

Dim myAdapterAsNew System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapterDim myDataSetAsNew System.Data.DataSetDim mySelectCommandAsNew System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand

mySelectCommand.CommandText =

"SELECT * from Device_Type where Category LIKE " & DDLDevType.SelectedItem.Text

mySelectCommand.Connection = MyConn

MyConn.Open()

Grid1.DataSource = myDataSet

Grid1.Databind()

MyConn.Close()

</code>

Are you sure your connection string is in appSettings in the config file? In .NET 2.0, Connection strings were moved to a connectionStrings element. Here is an example:
<configuration><connectionStrings><add name="connectionStringName" connectionString="ConnectionString" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings></configuration>
If indeed your connection is in connectionStrings and not appSettings, modify your VB code to look like this:
Dim connectionStringAs String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("connectionStringName").ConnectionString
|||

Thanks - that worked. I think I understand. I can either have the connection string in the connection string or App Settings sections of my web.config, and need to address it accordingly, correct?

However, now I get an exception error on the next line

Dim

dataReaderAs System.Data.IDataReader = dbCommand.ExecuteReader(System.Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)

Error:

Exception Details:System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Incorrect syntax near ')'.

The syntax looks ok to me, so I'm guessing it's not syntax, rather a malformed statement in this context, but I can't see what. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help - much appreciated.

|||It is your SQL Command that appears to have the problem. Post it here (edit it if you need to so you don't exploit sensative information. Make a dummy that looks like yours) so we can get it fixed.|||

Hondaman900:

Thanks - that worked. I think I understand. I can either have the connection string in the connection string or App Settings sections of my web.config, and need to address it accordingly, correct?

That is correct. However, ASP.NET 2.0 recommends that you keep the connection string in the connectionStrings element and not AppSettings.

|||

Not exactly what it is you're saying. All my code is posted above, except for the web.config connection string itself. Here it is:

<

connectionStrings>

<

addname="ASOCTCOConnectionString"connectionString="Data Source=PAVILLION\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=ASOCTCO;Integrated Security=True"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

</

connectionStrings>

The command being passed is a "close" at the end of the offending line.

Does this help?

Thanks again :)

|||

Ah OK. I already forgot your code was at the topSmile

I think the problem is the Command try a command like this, first:

"SELECT * FROM Device_Type"

And see if that works. If it does, then there is a problem with th filtering. I might suggest this:

"SELECT * from Device_Type where Category LIKE '" & DDLDevType.SelectedItem.Text & "'"

I would also recommend that you use Paramters in your command instead of generation a command string. This will help prevent SQL Injection attacks.

|||

Thanks for all the help. My SQL statement wasn't formatted properly and I of course needed the single quotes <slapping forehead>.

I've hit another snag. I'm getting an error saying that mySelectCommand is not declared, even though it's declared on the line above.

Line 17: Dim mySelectCommand As New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
Line 18:
Line 19: mySelectCommand.CommandText = "SELECT * from Device_Type where Category LIKE '" & DDL_DevType.SelectedItem.Text & "'"
Line 20:
Line 21: mySelectCommand.Connection = MyConn

I thought that maybe I should form mySelectCommand as so:

Dim

mySelectCommandAs System.Data.IDbCommand =New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand()

but I got the same results. Any suggestions? It used to be so easy to form a DataSet and manipulate the data thereafter in code - can't seem to crack this one.

|||

If I encapsulate this code in a function, such as

Function

GetDDValues(ByVal technologyAsString)As System.Data.IDataReader()

the declaration errors go away. Am I hitting up against a namespace issue?

|||

Here's another version, trying for a DataReader instead of a DataSet, that should also work, but same issue:

Dim connectionStringAsString = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MSOCTCOConnectionString").ConnectionString

Dim queryStringAsString ="SELECT Supplier from Device_Type where Category LIKE '" & DDL_DevType.SelectedItem.Text &"'"

Dim dbConnectionasNew SqlConnection(connectionString)

Dim CmdAsNew SqlCommand(queryString, dbConnection)

Dim objDRAs SqlDataReader

dbConnection.Open()

objDR = Cmd.ExecuteReader(System.Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)

I'm being told that dbConnection and objDR are not yet declared when I go to use them in the last two lines. What the heck is going on?? There has to be some fundamental setting in 2.0 that I'm missing.

|||

Looks like I'm answering my own posts!:)

I think I may have found the issue. I forgot to wrap the code in a procedure. I put it in the PageLoad procedure and all seems well again. I confused myself by writing the code in-line in the script section of the page. I was spoiled by the provided wrapper of VS when using a code-behind .vb file.

|||

Glad to see everything is going OK.

go to page x of y fast - not supported in sql server 2008?

I've been using full-text for quite some time, but I switched to another product for quite some time. The reason is that microsoft full-text doesn't offer the feature where one can get a resultset of page x out of y pages, i.e: give me top 100 matches of page 125 out of 5000 pages. I disappointedly waited for SQL Server 2005 and now it doesn't seem to support in sql server 2008 full-text search either. I had to get all 5000 pages of data, then jumped to page 125 to get just 100 records of that page--had to go get a coffee and came back for a 2+ millions rows table. Customers want the result in a split of a second.

Anyone knows if the final version of sql server 2008 will have better support for paging and getting top x rows? I scanned through 2008 BOL and didn't see any change from sql server 2005 or even sql server 2000 full-text search. (one improvement in sql server 2005 over sql server 2000 was the speed of populating large catalog and multiple languages support)

Thanks,

HH

As the final or even the CTP version with these functions is not out, you won′t get a defintite answer to your questions, but there are (even more than) plans to integrate the fulltext engine in the relational engine which will be able to do query optimization on the fulltext part as well. But you never know if it makes into the final version. :-)

GMT time to CST with daylight savings

I have the database on a GMT server and a logdate that is in GMT too. How do I convert this into CST (GMT -6) , during daylight savings (GMT-5) when passing it back to the webpage.

I can use DATEADD(hh,-6,LogDate) but how do I know if the daylight savings period has started to do DATEADD(hh,-5,LogDate). I also want to solve this at the database level without altering the front-end.

Thanks.

Is your database server in CST? And really, the conversion SHOULD be done on the front end.|||

database is on GMT.

Ok if on frontend how do i do it. I have around 7000 rows to be retrieved and all need to be converted to CST from GMT. Is there a quick way to do this. I have everything in the dataset/datatable.

|||Also the server now is on CST but can be moved to EST anyday. Can I have a key in web.config to be changed when this is done. Daylight savings is also an important issue here.

GMT Time

I have got GMT Time Data on my database.
It is possible to used the user's time on a chart or in a table ?You can convert GMT (now called UTC) time to local time using
DateTime.ToLocalTime() method. Check

Global Variable

Hi All,

I tried to get a global variable in my task scritp by using "Dts.Variables("myVar").Value", every time I've got an error

The element cannot be found in a collection. This error happens when you try to retrieve an element from a collection on a container during execution of the package and the element is not there.

I've seen some examples online to get global varaibles in task script and all of them display the same code

Any idea

Franck

To access variable this way it has to be included in the list of ReadOnlyVariables or ReadWriteVariables on your script task properties SCRIPT properties section. Remember also that variables names are case sensitive.

Global Temporary table disappear

I have a stored procedure creating a global temporary table which is
used later in coldfusion code. Most of time it works. The coldfusion
will output what's in that global temporary table but sometimes that
global temporary table just disappear in coldfusion and the web page
errors out. I checked the procedure and the global temporary table
does get created. If you have any idea about this, please help!!!!!!!!
I'm stuck here and couldn't do anything about it. Thanks a million!Global temp tables disappear when connections stop referencing them. If the
web site has interrupted connectivity (basically every time you close a
connection, load a new page, etc) then they would not persist. If you are
okay with multiple users of the web site potentially accessing the same
global temp table, why not just use a permanent table? At least that will
only get deleted when you want it to...

>|||Those global temporary table are report tables. Basically if a user
runs a report, the store procedure will do all the calculations and
put the result into a global temporary table. Then the cold fusion
will return the result from that table. All the reports can be
customized so users will pick different columns and apply different
filters so the report tables will all be different. If we are using
permenant tables, we will create a lot if multiple users are using the
same report and they may be a problem for storage issue. As for
tempdb, it will be cleared on regular basis which is more manageable.
I don't understand coldfusion much so I don't know if they are loading
a new page or not. But I will definitely ask some other developer to
check that.

Global Temp Tables Getting Dropped form Time to Time

Hi all,

I have created several global temp tables to cache some intermediate results ...
However, it seems that after a while those tables will be dropped by SQL Server 2005 automatically (I have not restarted the server and no drop table statement ever executed against those tables). Is this a feature by design? How to make those global temp tables persistence to next service restart?

Thanks,
Ning
....maybe, but either way, you may want to consider using something other than global temp tables. Why don't you just create user tables and clear them out when you need to?|||

This is by design. ##tmp is dropped if the service is restarted and when there is no one else connects to it.

"Global temporary tables are automatically dropped when the session that created the table ends and all other tasks have stopped referencing them. The association between a task and a table is maintained only for the life of a single Transact-SQL statement. This means that a global temporary table is dropped at the completion of the last Transact-SQL statement that was actively referencing the table when the creating session ended."

|||

Global temp tables are dropped after the last connection to the server closes. It is by design. As long as a connection is open, the tables persist.

If you need permenance of a table, then don't use 'Temp' tables -they are temporary...

IIf(System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Hours > 0, System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Hours & " hour(s), ", "") +
IIf(System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Minutes > 0, System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Minutes & " minute(s), ", "") +
IIf(System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Seconds > 0, System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Seconds & " second(s), ", "") +
IIf(System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Milliseconds > 0, System.DateTime.Now.Subtract(Globals!ExecutionTime).Milliseconds & " millisecond(s)", "")
