while this did work, it seems to be the unsupported way.

Im not opposed to going back and doing it right, but was there ever a conclusion as to why the BIDS program sometimes doesnt install? im using 2k5 express products on this machine...
Did you have any other version/Edition of Visual Studio on your computer when you installed the Toolkit? If so, which version and Edition? Was the existing version/Edition installed to the Default location?
I've not been able to reproduce this problem myself, which makes it hard to figure out how to fix it. Thanks for the additional information.

|||the Visual Studio products currently on this machine are all express editions, this would include
vb express, C# express, and visual web developer express...
i think its important to mention i had the pro beta 2k5 on this machine as well.... i know there was trouble for some upgrading their visual studios to 2k5 after having used the beta so maybe this issue ties into that?
let me know if theres any more info i can provide.
|||Mike,
I have tried to install BIDS ( from the tool kit) on two different machines each are not finding devenv.exe. Both machines are winXP sp2. Both machine have netframe 1.1 and 2.0. Both machines have sql 2005 express advanced. One machine has VS 2003 and the other machine has vs c# express and web developer express. Both toolkit installs were done to the default directory.
I hope this helps in youor being able to recreate and provide a fix.
|||Thanks to both of you for your replies, one more piece of information I'm looking for is the path to which you installed the VS programs. If you could reply with that, it would be very helpful.

|||I ran through the toolkit install again to capture the default installation path but since It saw that "...the selected component is already installed" , I did not see it. So.....went to Control Panel/add/remove programs and seeing no change/remove specifically for BIDS, I selected MS SQL Server 2005 change. Then selected BIDS to be removed. Afterwards, I ran the tool kit install and selected only BIDS to be installed but still get the message that the selected component is already installed. So........where to now? Is it time to just start over by uninstalling/re-installing evrrything from netframe 2.0, sql express and VS express?|||Hi Kendsr,
I think you're mis-interpreting what I'm asking. I want to know where you installed Visual Studio not BIDS. There seems to be an association between having any Visual Studio Edition installed on your computer to a non-default location prior to installing BIDS that is causing this problem and I'm trying to determine if this is the case for you.
Thanks for the additional troubleshooting. Also, make sure to do a search on your computer for devenv.exe to see if it is found anywhere on your computer at all.
Mike
|||my path for the express products isC:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8
i take the defaults when i install, just out of the memory of .dll troubles of yesteryear and things looking for the default paths.... However i could see how having the beta of 2k5 installed at the time might have made the installer default to another directroy... let me know if theres any more info youd like... i guess we could always look for registry problems?

Just to confirm, do both of you have a working version(s) of Visual Studio on your computer?
If so, what versions?
Could you pull up the properties of the shortcut for your VS product and let me know what the target is?
A bit of a technical explaination here: BIDS is not a product, it is a set of VS projects that allow you to build RS reports. These projects are available from any non-Express VS product. Devenv.exe is just the normal VS development shell, and the BIDs shortcut is simply a pointer to the VS shell. If you have a non-Express version of Visual Studio 2005 installed before you install BIDS, the shortcuts the BIDS and VS should point ot the same place.
As I've said, we've found that if you installed VS to a non-standard location, it looks like the BIDS shortcut ends up pointing to the wrong place. The work around is to update the shortcut to point at the actual location where devenv.exe is sitting. The story is more complex if you have one of the VS Express Editions on you computer, we can't leverage VS Express installations, so we have to install our own copy of VS for BIDS to use.
Thanks for sticking with this and providing this information.
Regards,
Mike
|||i have what appears to be fully working express products.... C # express
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\VCSExpress.exe"
vb express
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\vbexpress.exe"
web dev express
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\VWDExpress.exe"
if its looking for a full version of Visual studio i can see why it was missing... i had the beta of 2k5 but have since uninstalled it(before i attempted sql server express installs) ... i havent really made a full project out of any of the express products but i have several littel test like apps that compile and run with no errors.
another thing to note is that im pretty sure i searched for a devenv.exe and came up empty handed when i ran a search on my PC... i was going to try and point the shortcut at the right place....
im still open to more questions so feel free to ask away !

Normally this problem is related to non-default installation location, which doesn't seem to be the case here. I'm wondering if something about having the beta version installed might have caused this issue. If all you have on your computer is the VS Express editions, then you wouldn't find devenv.exe, since VS Express use different environments. In that case, the Express Toolkit should install it's own version of VS to be used by BIDS.
You actually got this working by running vs_setup.msi individually, right? We'll likely not be able to track down the cause of the original problem in this case, but I want to make sure you actually have a working verson of BIDS. In your case, it seems something prevented the Toolkit installer from correctly running vs_setup.msi during the full product setup, I'm guessing it's related to the beta.

|||let me see if I understand all this.......
On my laptop which has .net1.1, .net2.0, sql express 2005 and VS c# express......the tool kit should have installed it's own version of VS to be used by BIDS. I don't see this version and there is no devenv.exe on the laptop.
On my machine at work which has .net 1.1, .net 2.0, sql express 2005 and VS 2003......the toolkit would install the BIDS projects to be used by VS 2003. There is a devenv.exe in the VS 2003 directory and when I change the target on the BIDS shortcut to point to that version, I don't see the BIDS projects.
In both cases of installing the toolkit, I was never asked nor did I provide an installation path. So I'm not exactly sure where the toolkit went. The laptop thinks BIDS is still installed as I can't do a re-install after removing it via control panel/ms sql server/change.
I'm willing to stick this out as I'm keen on evaluating this tool, but I have to admit, it should not be this complicated.
|||yeah i was able to get the BIDS to install by running the vs_setup.msi by itself... it seems to be fully functional and such, but i was double checking because i would hate to run into a brick wall later on down the road...not sure what it was about the beta, but i seem to recall lots of bug issues with people installing the pro vs 2k5 ... maybe its all related , but somehow i think im the only one around here that ran the beta and not the express... oh well another mystery, but at least it has a work around... thanks for looking into things

Hi Kendsr,
Let me see if I can take a step back and explain how this all works...
What is BIDS? - BIDS is a set of Project Templates that plug into Visual Studio 2005. Depending on the Edition of SQL Server you install, you can get projects for Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services. For SQL Express Toolkit you only get the Reporting Services templates because that's all that is installed by SQL Express.
What is devenv.exe? - This is the executable for the Visual Studio development environment. BIDS can only use the Visual Studio 2005 development environment, earlier versions can't be used.
How does SQL Express Toolkit use VS 2005? - When you install BIDS from the SQL Express toolkit, we look to see if you have any non-Express Edition of Visual Studio 2005 installed. If you have one of theses Editions installed, we just install the BIDS Project Templates and add a BIDS shortcut that points to the existing VS 2005 devenv.exe. If you don't have VS 2005 installed, or if you only have the VS Express Editions installed (which don't have devenv.exe), then we install a scalled down version of VS 2005 along with the BIDS Project Templates and shortcut.
As I said earlier, we only use VS 2005, you can not use BIDS with VS 2003. In the case where you have only VS 2003 installed, SQL Express Toolkit should install the scaled down version of VS 2005 for use by BIDS, it won't even recognize the 2003 install.
Now back to your specific configuration
We've found an issue where the BIDS shortcut points to the wrong location when any Edition of VS 2005, including the Express Editions, is installed to a non-default location before the Toolkit is installed. In this case, devenv.exe does exist on the computer, it's just not where the BIDS shortcut thinks it is. In this case, simply pointing the shortcut to the correct location solves the problem. (Again, this is 2005 only, you can't use 2003 for this.) Specifically, devenv.exe is installed under <root>\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE where <root> is what ever non-default location you picked during Visual Studio 2005 installation. (Note: This has nothing to do with the location where you install SQL Express Toolkit)
You see to have some other issue that results in the scaled back version of VS not being installed when it should be. It would be interesting to take a look at your setup logs from when you installed the Toolkit to see if they say anything about what happened. The setup logs are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG, could you find the logs from when you installed Toolkit and see if there is anything interesting?
Could you also take a look at the shortcut for C# Express on your computer and tell me where it points to?
Thanks,
Mike
|||That's the explanation I was looking for. The only thing I see in the Summary.txt file are messages about not meeting hardware requirements ( i believe this is memory though I have 512MB on both machibes - maybe that's not enough? Though the checks during install only issue a warning) also message about install being interupted which I believe coincides with the message saying BIDS is already installed. I've tried this several times on my laptop and probably have it good and hosed by now. It might be a good idea to reinstall sql express 2005 and then the tool kit again. Now that I kno where to look foe install messages, that might be easier. At one time - in the early log files The file "...TOOL.txt" showed successful install. Also saw a successful removal but no other "...TOOL.txt" files since. Is it possible to just remove sql express 2005 via the control panel and start over or do I need to clear out anything else?
As far as the machine at work, I'll check it when I get in tomorrow. Probably will want to do the same thing.
Thanks for your patience
